Project term:

1993 - 1996

Project:

Rehabilitation of the right-bank river Elbe dike in Prignitz rural district (Federal State of Brandenburg)

Protection of approx. 20,000 people (e.g. the cities of Wittenberge and Lenzen), some 20,000 hectares of cultivated land, and some 25,000 livestock.

The overall project forms part of the nature preserve ”Brandenburgische Elbtalaue” (Brandenburg river Elbe valley meadows).

Technical features and parameters:

The relevant dike section has a length of 73.5 km (between river km 431 near the river Havel mouth and river km 502 near Dörnitz municipality)

The length of the rehabilitated backwater retention dikes is 44.7 km.

The freeboard heightening on the dike safety height of 1.0 m above the base flood water level HQ100.

The stability of the dikes for the base flood water level is jeopardised by through-flow and underflow.

The demanding shaping of the dike profile in the vicinity of very old, valuable trees.

All required coordination was sought with the nature preservation agency and the administration of the natural preserve from the initial design phase to the construction.

The nominal profile of the right-bank river Elbe dike, which was built by including the existing dike, has the following parameters in the natural landscape:

Crest width 3.50 m

Slope gradient downstream and upstream 1 : 3

Downstream berm with a width of 5.0 m including dike protection path
